The Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday demolished a part of a madrasa in the city that was encroaching upon a road built under a town planning (TP) scheme.

The demolition work was carried out by the BMC under police bandobast and it went off peacefully, authorities said.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Bhavnagar Municipal Commissioner Narender Kumar Meena said that the madrasa is of Madrasa-e-Islami Sarvajanik Trust and some portion of it was coming in the way of a 24-metre wide TP road. Meena said that a final order of removal of the portion of the building was passed two years ago after hearing the madrasa authorities and the matter has gone to High Court, but there was no stay order against demolition from the HC.

According to Meena, only the boundary wall and some residential parts of the madrasa have been demolished.
