Jugal Kishor,a city-based carpenter, was in for a shock when he checked his account balance at a Punjab National Bank ATM here on Tuesday morning. With his account balance showing Rs 59 crore,he had turned a crorepati overnight.

A scared Kishor then called up his chartered accountant Purshottam Khandelwal and pleaded with him to get the bank to take back the money. The two then contacted the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industries (GCCI),which subsequently asked the bank to take back the money.

Khandelwal said: “He is an honest man. Although he earns no more than Rs 2 lakh a year,he files his IT Returns regularly.”

GCCI vice-president Sameer Patel said: “We contacted the Gujarat Circle Head of PNB and requested him not to conduct an inquiry against Kishor or freeze his account. He has a balance of Rs 2.50 lakh in it. We requested the bank to keep this amount and take the rest.”

He said the bank agreed to their request and PNB has since withdrawn the amount from Kishor’s account and has settled the matter.

On its part, the bank said the amount may have showed up in Kishor’s account because of an erroneous entry, adding that the amount was not actually credited.

V P Goswami,Senior Manager (Marketing),PNB said: “It was a technical mistake. We suspect that his account number was wrongly fed into the bank’s database. We checked his account statement. The sum was not actually credited, but had only flashed in his account. We are investigating this.”
