As many as 9,218 teachers were fined by the Gujarat education department for making counting mistakes in the answer sheets of students of Class 10 and 12 in 2022 and 2023, the state government informed the Assembly Tuesday. The fine imposed on the teachers amounts to around Rs 1.54 crore, the statement in response to a starred question by Patan Congress MLA Kirit Patel said. According to the government, 6,561 teachers had paid fine to the tune of more than Rs 1 crore by December 2023, while 2,657 teachers were yet to pay the fine that is cumulatively worth over Rs 53 lakh. To avoid such mistakes, the government reply said, a verifier has been appointed in each team of evaluators.
