The Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) — the government’s first-of-its-kind initiative of a centralised online admission system for higher education across 15 state universities — saw more than seven lakh registrations till Sunday evening. Education department officials said most of the universities have witnessed a record number of applications this year owing to the open online platform for students to register from anywhere.

More than 5.05 lakh registrations were for undergraduate programmes, while around 1.19 lakh were for postgraduate courses. Of nearly 7.06 lakh candidates, around 4.37 lakh have made payments. The last date to register for undergraduate programmes under GCAS was extended to June 2 after several requests from students. Similarly, the last date for post graduate programmes was June 13. Among 15 state universities, Gujarat University has recorded the highest registrations of over a lakh followed by Veer Narmad South Gujarat University and Saurashtra University Rajkot with over 84,000 and 60,000 registrations respectively.

Students can register for BA, BCom, BSc, BBA, BCA programmes and other graduate-level courses at the 15 universities through GCAS. They can choose more than one programme, college or university in a single application but can secure an admission to only a single programme through an application.
