Over 25,000 doctors across Gujarat are expected to strike work on June 25 in protest against the decision of the Central government to pass the National Council for Human Resources in Health (NCHRH) Bill,2011.

“NCHRH is of the government,by the government and for the government. It is not for health professionals,” said Dr Mehul Shah, president at Ahmedabad chapter of Indian Medical Association.

“All private hospitals will remain closed on Monday but emergency services will be made available to the patients. However, government hospitals will continue to function. Government doctors and nurses will wear black bands at work. Medical students will also join the strike,” Shah added.

IMA’s local chapter will also be holding a candle-light march at various places in the city.

The NCHRH Bill aims at bringing standardisation and stringent patient safety norms for medical establishments. With the passage of the Bill, all types of Councils (dental, medical, pharmacy, nursing, ayurvedic etc.) are expected to come under the direct control of the central government.

“We do not even want the Clinical Establishment Bill to get passed in the state Legislative Assembly,” Shah said. The Clinical Establishment Bill has proposed a 3.5-year course for people in rural areas to get a doctor’s degree. The IMA maintains that even a 5-year course for becoming a doctor is less.
