One person died on Saturday, allegedly due to gastroenteritis caused by polluted water in the walled city area, where another 16 have fallen ill, said Surendra Baxi, the Opposition leader in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). The condition of one of the patients is reportedly critical.

He said despite several representations there was no improvement in water supply, which forced people to drink contaminated water, leading to the illness.

Baxi alleged that Saturday’s death at Golwad in Kalupur ward was due to gastroenteritis.

The deceased has been identified as Kalidas Ramanlal Rana (55),while the condition of one Shamalbhai Dhobi (60) is reportedly critical. Among the other 16 ill are four children and 11 women.

“Stagnant water in drains and catch pits and silting has made the jetting machines ineffective,” Baxi said.

The water supply problem was also raised in the water supply committee meeting on Saturday where Congress member Krishna Thakar threw her cellphone at the additional city engineer.

She said despite calling up the official 19 times in two days, there was no reply from the office. Krishna even threatened the administration that if there was no solution to the problem, she would go on a 72-hour hunger strike from May 1 outside the municipal commissioner’s residence.
