People wanting to have vehicle registration numbers of their choice will now have to pay double of what they paid earlier,with the state transport department hiking the fees for special numbers.
The new charges will be effective from June 11,2012,State Transport Commissioner J P Gupta said.
As per his announcement,the charge for special numbers for two-wheelers have been raised from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000. For four wheelers,it is now Rs 5,000 as against Rs 3,000.
Last year,the department had earned Rs 42 crore by allotting special numbers.
The transport department will also select some golden and silver category numbers that are in high demand. Such numbers will have a base price tag and will be allotted through auction.
