The state government has now decided to introduce soyabean food fortification for schoolchildren across Gujarat. An announcement was made in this regard on Friday as the government kicked off a state-wide drive to distribute fortified wheat among 44 lakh primary schoolchildren under the mid-day meal scheme. Chief Minister Narendra Modi said at the launch of the fortified wheat flour programme at a primary school in Gandhinagar that the government will soon launch a Rs 200-crore project in this regard. Soyabean flour will be mixed with fortified wheat flour and distributed among the mid day meal scheme schoolchildren across Gujarat,he said. He added that Gujarat was the first among other states in the country to take an initiative to provide fortified wheat flour to 44 lakh primary schoolchildren under the mid-day meal scheme,by roping in several voluntary organisations. He appealed to the people to join hands with the government to fight against malnutrition,prevalent mainly among the poor children and pregnant women.
