The Regional Transport Office here will introduce the Vahan software for the registration of vehicles and then send the numbers through SMS.
The new software, developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC),aims to make the entire process of vehicle registration computerised.
The software will be linked with the RTO office and they will feed the data of the vehicles sold, online. Once the data is received, the registration numbers will be allotted through computer generated system and sent via SMS to the buyers.
Regional Transport Officer A B Gor said: Vahan is the national software, which when implemented, can make our work twice as fast. With this system, the dealers of the vehicles can give us the details of the vehicles sold, online. The details received will be fed through Vahan in our database.
He added: Earlier, the dealers used to come to the office to hand over the details, which took about 2-3 days. Now,even when the RTO is shut on holidays, the data feeding process will be on. Once the data is given to us,randomisation of the numbers will be done fast.
Gor said the RTO has cut short the long registration process further by giving the registration numbers of the vehicles to the buyers,on mobile phones.
He added: After using Vahan for the registration process,we will give the vehicle numbers directly to the customers on their phones. They need not come to the RTO or go to the dealer and wait for hours to get their desired numbers.
He said vehicle registration in Ahmedabad is the highest in Gujarat.
This is a pro-public approach. Ahmedabad has a huge population of vehicles and we required a faster and a modern method of registration, he said, adding that after Ahmedabad,it will be implemented in Surat and later to all RTOs working in the municipal corporation limits in various cities across Gujarat.
Vahan was previously implemented in 2008 for the registration of cars and later in February 2009 for two wheelers.
Now,the RTO aims to use Vahan for all vehicles and in complete functioning of the body.
