No swine flu scanners at Kankaria carnival

Thermal scanners that were installed at the University Ground in Ahmedabad during the Navratri festivities to screen fever cases will be missing during the seven-day Kankaria carnival.

Thermal scanners that were installed at the University Ground in Ahmedabad during the Navratri festivities to screen fever cases will be missing during the seven-day Kankaria carnival.

“When we asked the nodal officers in the health department if those thermal scanners would be made available, they expressed their inability to do so,saying they were brought from some outside agency, which cannot be done this time,” said AMC medical officer (health) Dr S P Kulkarni.

The absence of thermal scanners, that could screen a horde of around 30 visitors in one go,will make the task a bit daunting for the health department of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). “But since the spectre of swine flu looms large in the thick of winter,“we will deploy six medical teams at the carnival venue to check the visitors,” said Dr Kulkarni.

Going by last year’s carnival experience,no great rush is expected this time except for those who will venture out of homes to have a ride on BRT buses that will be extended up to Kankaria Lake upon the inauguration of the carnival,AMC sources said.

Unlike last time, when seven stages had been set up around the lake, this year the AMC is putting three performing stages. Medical teams will be deployed near these stages,as these will have a larger concentration of people, said Dr Kulkarni.
