The police have booked the executive editor, two reporters and a photographer of leading vernacular daily Divya Bhaskar for manipulating news allegedly to increase readership after the newspaper published a photograph of Rajkot Police Commissioner Geetha Johri partying on the New Years eve.
On Friday, the dailys executive editor Kana Batwa, state editor Avnish Jain, reporter Aniruddh Nakum and photographer Prakash Ravrani went to the police chiefs office with some mediapersons to court arrest. While Johri was on leave,DCP P Pande told them a probe was on and they were yet to gather evidence.
The complaint was filed by Malaviyanagar police inspector S K Rai with the Gandhigram police station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The complaint said the two reporters and a photographer gatecrashed a party held at a private place, took photographs of a couple in a manner that the images appeared obscene and published them to create sensational news.
The complaint mentioned that the article also carried a picture of Johri alongside the couples photographs.
The newspaper, however, maintained it was neither a private place nor a private party. Bantwa said the party was held at Neel City Club for which passes were sold. He said his staffers carried entry passes and it was not a gatecrash.
The paper alleged that Johri slapped Ravrani after he clicked her photos. They should have arrested us if we have really violated any law. There is no point in fabricating a case, said Bantwa.
When contacted,Johri said it was a breach of her privacy. She said it was a rock show for invitees, including IPS and IAS officers. I was in a group of family members when the photographer pushed others aside and clicked my photos despite me asking him not to do so since it was my private time with family and friends, Johri said.
She said that in the article published in the daily the next day,two unrelated incidents were clubbed together to give it a sensational angle. The couple was asked by the photographer to pose in a certain manner and then their photo was pasted along with mine to give an obscene touch to the party, Johri said.
