Nalin Bhatt quits BSP,says he could not raise issues within party forum

Unable to bear “suffocation” in the party, the Brahmin face of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Gujarat,Nalin Bhatt, quit from its primary membership on Wednesday. Bhatt has also decided to revive Deendayal Seva Sangharsh Samiti,an outfit he had put on hold after joining BSP on September 16,2007.

Bhatt submitted his resignation to BSP state leaders and national president Mayawati, saying he was quitting on his own as within the party forum,he was not finding avenue to raise voice against injustices being inflicted on people by the UPA government at the Centre and the Modi government in the state. He said BSP lacked the mechanism for this while the people were fed up with the two governments “and therefore,I have regained freedom from silence in the BSP”.

A former state education minister in the BJP government of 1995,Bhatt was unhappy over allegations made by some responsible BSP leaders that the members of the minority community were not joining the party because of his (Bhatt’s) impression of being a-Hindu communalist leader. Bhatt in a statement claims that it was because of this reason that he had voluntarily declined to accept the post of general secretary in the party at the recent exercise to revamp the organisation.

Bhatt said in the coming days he would reinforce his fight against anti-national elements being “shielded by the Modi government”. He said recently Osama bin Laden’s portraits were displayed in Vadodara, but those behind the act were spared. Bhatt said he would run a full-blown campaign against the “hypocritical Hindutva” of Modi.

It maybe recalled that Bhatt had used his organisational skills and personal support base, especially among the upper caste population,to make BSP strong in Gujarat. However,he had started feeling let down when questions were raised over his non-inclusion in the recast party unit.

State BSP convenor Surender Kaloriya said the decision to quit the party was Bhatt’s personal matter. He refused to comment further on this when asked about Bhatt’s statement about his feeling “suffocated” within the BSP.
