Mother drowns 6-month-old daughter in Bhavnagar

A woman was arrested for allegedly drowning her six-month-old daughter to death in Botad taluka of Bhavnagar on Thursday,police said.

A woman was arrested for allegedly drowning her six-month-old daughter to death in Botad taluka of Bhavnagar on Thursday,police said.

The incident came to light in the Haranikui area of Botad taluka on Wednesday,after the body of six-month-old Shifa was found lying in a water-filled pit behind a godown,about one kilometer away from her house.

A complaint was filed by Shifa’s grandfather Noor Mohamad Dhandhukia,after she was not found in the house. During the interrogation of family members,the baby’s mother,Yasmin,confessed that she had killed Shifa by drowning her in a water-filled pit,police said.

According to the police,Yasmin told them that soon after the birth of Shifa,her mother-in-law and sister-in-law started questioning whether Shifa was fathered by her husband Shabbir or someone else. They raised doubts based on skin complexion of the baby,police added.

Yasmin told the police that she was tired of the constant mental torture by her in-laws and decided to get rid of the baby. Yasmin’s in-laws are being questioned and further investigation is on,police added.
