The Oreva Group on Monday submitted before a division bench of the Gujarat High Court that on March 14, it has deposited 50 per cent of interim compensation to the victims of Morbi bridge collapse that killed 135 persons and that it will deposit the second installment on or before April 11.
On February 22, the high court ordered the company to pay interim compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh each to the 56 who were injured in the incident.
The Oreva Group (Ajanta Manufacturing Pvt. Ltd) was responsible for the operation and maintenance of the British-era bridge over the Machchhu river in Morbi that collapsed on October 30, 2022.
The submission from the company came before the court of acting Chief Justice AJ Desai and Justice Biren Vaishnav that briefly took up the suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) on the bridge collapse incident. The court has kept the matter next for April 18.
Earlier, Oreva Group Managing Director Jaysukh Patel moved the Morbi sessions court seeking interim bail for 15-20 days, saying his presence was necessary to get a loan sanctioned and property mortgaged amid the approaching financial year-end to pay the interim compensation amount. The court, however, rejected the plea.
