A man spent two days behind the bars as the police got confused because of the same name mentioned in an FIR in connection with a robbery case here. He was released Tuesday after the police realised that they had picked up a wrong person.
The Karelibaug police realised their mistake after the victim,Bhartiben Kakde, identified the man,Hemant Pardesi,as a different person than the one against whom she had filed an FIR on May 11,during identification parade.
Pardesi had been arrested Saturday and sent to two-day judicial custody on Monday. Karelibaug Police Inspector S M Varotariya said the confusion emerged due to the way the accused were named in the FIR and their similarity to Pardesi and his wife,Sunita.
While Kakde, who had lodged an FIR,had given full name of one accused, the identity of other two accused was not clear by name, Varotariya said.
In her FIR,Kakde had identified three persons Bhavnaben Kahar,Sunitaben, and Sunitabens husband as three accused who robbed her of a TV set and jewellery together worth Rs 12,600.
Police first arrested Bhavnaben Kahar, who led them to the husband-wife duo. Police were confident about Pardesi and his wife being the other two accused after they moved court to seek anticipatory bail following the arrest of Bhavnaben Kahar, who knew and named them as the other two accused.
When Bhavnaben was arrested, she said she knew Hemant Pardesi and Sunita, the husband-wife due, with description similar to the ones who were named in the FIR. So we set out to arrest them. While Sunitaben sought and got anticipatory bail,Pardesi failed to do so and was arrested, Varotariya said.
The police registered an application to the local court seeking to drop offences against Pardesi under section 169 of CRPC. Meanwhile, police arrested another accused named Bhikhabhai Kahar in this case and sent him to one-day remand.
