Minor rams car into bike, kills one, injures another; brother arrested

The investigation into the case was handed over to the Crime Branch by Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut on Friday after which the brother of the teenager was arrested.

Over two weeks after a man was killed and his friend severely injured when their bike was hit by a speeding car being allegedly driven by a teenager, Surat police have arrested the brother of the minor who was at the wheel on the night of the accident on September 4.

The car owner was arrested on Monday and, after being produced before a magistrate on Tuesday, sent to the Surat Central Jail. The arrested person, a resident of Adajan Patia area in the city, was in Delhi for business-related work when the incident took place, said sources.

He was arrested under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections pertaining to negligence. On September 4, a speeding car driven by a teenager accompanied by three of his friends jumped the road divider on Pal Umra bridge and rammed into a bike coming from the opposite direction.

Police said the bike rider, Chintan Malaviya (44) and Parth Malaviya (42), the pillion rider, suffered severe injuries in the accident. Chintan and Parth were rushed to New Civil hospital where the former was declared dead on arrival. Parth, who was in a critical state, survived but had to get one of his legs amputated.

Police said the minor driving the car and his friend seated next to him also incurred injuries while their two friends on the back seat escaped from the spot.

Pal police lodged a case of reckless driving against the teenager and began a probe in the case.

Crime Branch sources said that the teenager had taken the keys of his brother’s car without informing his family members. The teenager allegedly drove the car at 120 kmph and lost control over the steering wheel, resulting in the accident.

The teenager, who had multiple fractures on his body, is still undergoing treatment at a private hospital while his friend, also a minor, was discharged from the hospital on Monday.
