The Vadodara Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Sunday arrested a man for allegedly circulating morphed videos of hate speech of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leaders and clips of an unrelated incident of rioting on social media after the stone pelting incident during the Ram Navami procession in Vadodara on March 30.
The SIT also arrested another VHP member in connection with the FIR lodged at Karelibaug police station for allegedly delivering inciting speeches ahead of the stone-pelting incident. While Rohan Shah had been arrested on Saturday, the police have arrested Rishi Walia, who has been remanded in police custody.
Irfan Mohammad Vohra was arrested for allegedly circulating morphed videos under IPC Sections 153(A), and for imputations or assertions prejudicial to national integration [153(B)] and for committing offence in a place of worship or in an assembly engaged in the performance of religious worship (505) in a case filed by the Cyber Crime Police station.
Five more persons have also been arrested for the stone pelting incident, in which 23 persons were arrested earlier.
The SIT on Sunday said that five accused belonging to both communities had been identified from CCTV footage and arrested on Sunday in the FIR at the City police station, in which 23 persons were arrested earlier. The SIT said that five of the 23 persons arrested earlier, who were remanded to police custody, have now been sent to judicial custody at the end of the remand period.
“A total of 28 accused have been arrested in the case so far, while the SIT officers continue to identify persons from CCTV footage. One of the five accused arrested on Sunday has been remanded in one-day police custody,” Assistant Commissioner of Police, Harpalsinh Rathod said on Sunday.
Both accused have been accused under Section 153A of the Indian Penal code for wanton vilification or attacks upon the religion, race, place of birth, residence, language etc of any particular group or class or upon the founders and prophets of a religion.
