A Gandhidham court in Kutch district Thursday awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment to a 22-year-old man after finding him guilty of snatching a mobile phone from a youth who was out for a walk in the Adipur town in 2021. The verdict comes around two weeks after the accused was awarded 10 years imprisonment in a similar case.
The court of Additional District Judge MJ Parashar pronounced Shabbir alias Sablo Chavda guilty under IPC Section 379(a)(3). The court also fined Chavda Rs 10,000 and ordered that the convict will serve an additional six months in jail if he failed to pay the fine.
According to the prosecution, Chavda, a resident of Khari Rohar village on the outskirts of Gandhidham, snatched away the mobile phone worth Rs 17,000 from the youth who was on his evening walk. Chavda, who was riding a scooter, pushed the youth from behind near Sablo Maitri Garden in Adipur, snatched away the phone before speeding away.
“During the course of investigation, police recovered the complainant’s phone from Chavda. During proceedings, the complainant identified the accused, proving the prosecution’s case beyond reasonable doubt,” Mahendrasinh Jadeja, additional public prosecutor, said, adding, “The convict was awarded 10 years imprisonment around two weeks (ago) after court found him guilty in another case of snatching.”
