A private contractor hired by the Bhuj municipality was Sunday booked for negligence in the death of a labourer who died when the soil caved while laying a sewage line in Madhapar village on the outskirts of the town Saturday.
The family of the victim, Sumar Marwada (40), claimed his body and ended their protests after the police booked the contractor. Marwada, a Dalit, was a resident of Sudamavas near Rudrani Jagir on the outskirts of Bhuj.
The labourer was buried under soil after the trench dug for laying an underground sewage line caved in. He was rushed to GK General Hospital in Bhuj where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. The family had refused to claim the body and sat on a protest demanding a case be registered against the private contractor as well as the engineer concerned of the Bhuj municipality.
On Sunday, an FIR was registered at Madhapar police station on the basis of a complaint filed by Marvada’s wife Parma. The complaint named private contractor Narendra Velani.
“A case has been registered under IPC Section 304 (causing death by negligence) as well as under relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against the contractor as he knew there was risk involved in the work and yet, gave no safety equipment like helmet, safety shoes, harness, etc to the victim,” a police officer said.
