Kin agree to claim bodies after word from top cop

The Nepali family finally agreed on Friday night to claim the bodies of its three members who died two days ago in a mass suicide attempt by setting themselves on fire.

The Nepali family finally agreed on Friday night to claim the bodies of its three members who died two days ago in a mass suicide attempt by setting themselves on fire.

The change of mind came after intense persuasion by police and local Congress leaders.

Bharat Dalvani (45),his wife Asha (40) and his young brother Girish (35) had died while the family’s matriarch Hasumati (60) and Rekha (30),wife of his youngest brother Mahendra,are battling for life in a city hospital.

The five had set themselves on fire on the premises of Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) on Wednesday noon. The family had allegedly taken the extreme step apprehending their eviction from their dwelling built on common plot of Chhotunagar Cooperative Housing Society on Raiya Road.

Mahendra and Gauri,wife of Girish,had refused to claim possession of their bodies demanding arrest of “accused”.

Mahendra,the youngest of three brothers,Gauri,wife of Girish Dalvani who was the first to succumb to his burns,and Madhu,teenage daughter of the two other victims Bharat and Asha,met city Police Commissioner Harjeshwar Singh around 1:30 pm on Friday. “They demanded an inquiry in the incident and I have assured them of that,” Singh said.

Meanwhile,All India Nepalese Community Secretary Bheem Bahadur Thapa too visited the two women the hospital. “Pushing a family to commit suicide and then announcing compensation is a cruel joke on the family,” he said.
