Khadi Mahotsav: NIFT Gandhinagar to organise hand spinning workshop today
This workshop seeks to educate the younger generation about the historical and cultural importance of khadi and hand spinning, particularly in relation to India's independence movement, and its continuing relevance today

The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Gandhinagar is set to organise a hand spinning workshop on Thursday as part of the ongoing Khadi Mahotsav 2024.
Prof Sameer Sood, Director NIFT Gandhinagar, said, “The event will celebrate the rich heritage of khadi while promoting sustainable practices in textile production. In collaboration with the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), and in alignment with Khadi Paridhaan Divas, this workshop aims to engage NIFT students in the traditional art of hand spinning, highlighting its impact on rural livelihoods.”
However, khadi faces modern challenges, including a lack of interest among younger generations in working within the sector, despite its growing popularity as a fashion fabric, he added. This workshop seeks to educate the younger generation about the historical and cultural importance of khadi and hand spinning, particularly in relation to India’s independence movement, and its continuing relevance today, the institute stated on Wednesday.
The event will foster a sense of community and emphasise the importance of sustainable textile practices, the institute stated.
