Karmayogi Yojna fails to deliver as Board results at its all-time low this year

It has been two years that the state government had introduced the Karmayogi Yojna to enhance the efficiency of teachers. But the results seem to be nil despite various attempts by the Education department. The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) results dipped to an all-time low of 56.43 per cent this year (which is over 7 per cent less than last year’s success rate),has come as a big setback for the teachers.

Moreover,in a hurried reshuffling before the examination this year, the arrangement for

examination centres was changed such that there would be no ‘self centre’ for students this year. This year for the first time, the teachers were removed from playing the role of flying squad and were replaced by teams selected by district collectors from across

government departments. The move was to ensure that students don’t indulge in any kind of unfair means as indicated by GSHSEB officials.

The secondary results shot up by about 10 per cent in 2007 than in 2006,when the total pass percentage was 60.14. In 2007,it was 70.65 per cent, while in 2008 the overall results dipped to 63.58.

The Karmayogi teacher training programme — under which primary and secondary teachers are given a four to six days compulsory training for each subject — has not shown any positive signs on the Board results as targeted. Every year, residential training is organised during the Diwali vacations and summer vacations for primary, secondary and higher secondary teachers and the expenses are borne by the state government. The programme was targeted at increasing motivation and the feeling of responsibility among teachers, which would ultimately reflect in the results.

A department official said: “While fluctuations in the results were visible earlier as well. Self centres and inclusion of non-teaching officials in the flying squad cannot be the reason for this major dip this year. But it is possible that a sizeable number of students who could manage passing by using unfair means could not do it this year.”
