After two persons died when the roof collapsed at the decades-old Diamond Talkies building on Friday, the Junagadh Municipal Corporation (JMC) began action on Saturday. A drive to identify old structures that pose as a danger has been commenced in the old city area, said a JMC official. Apart from JMC,the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress have also demanded immediate action in this regard to avoid recurrence of such an incident in future, especially when monsoon is about to arrive. JMC City Engineer L K Vadher said: In the wake of Fridays incident,17 teams have been formed to survey all the 17 wards of JMC. Appropriate action will be taken after the teams submit their survey reports. According to Vadher, such a survey was conducted earlier to identify old structures existing in the city and notices were served to the concerned people. Congress corporator Pravin Tank from ward no 10 and president of the Junagadh city Congress unit, said in a statement: There exist a number of old buildings in the old city area that have not been attended to or repaired for years and that are likely to collapse, particularly during monsoon. JMC officials should immediately remove such buildings without any further delay. Tank said a survey to identify such old buildings was carried out by the JMC three months ago. However,no action has been taken yet. Pradeep Khimani,BJP corporator from ward 13said: The commissioner should take up this issue immediately and old buildings and structures in ruins should be instantly removed. And this should be done before the onset of monsoon.
