What was meant to be a meeting for apparent “reconciliation” in a relationship ended in the murder of a 36-year-old widow in Sikka town of Jamnagar taluka when her male friend allegedly slashed her with a sword multiple times, resulting in her death on the spot. On Thursday, police arrested the accused, identified as 42-year-old Sukhdevsinh Veeraji Jadeja, for the alleged murder.

The victim, identified as Neelam Ashwar, had been residing in her marital home in Sikka with her two children — aged 12 and 5 — after the passing of her husband around three years ago. Police said that Ashwar and Jadeja became friends but recently, they had an argument after which the victim had distanced herself from the accused.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 1.30 am Thursday when Ashwar and Jadeja met at the periphery of the local Sikka pond in order to “resolve their differences and attempt reconciliation”.

Based on the complaint filed by Jaydeep Vyas, the brother of the deceased, the police initiated a probe and the primary findings revealed that the two were meeting for a “reconciliation”.

Police Inspector JJ Chavda of Sikka police station told The Indian Express, “The accused and the deceased, who was a widow, were in a relationship for a while. They recently had some differences and the deceased decided to part ways with the accused. On the intervening night of Thursday, they met near the local pond, where Jadeja slashed her with a sword on her head and neck… We are investigating if the attack was pre-planned or spontaneous since he was carrying the weapon with him.”

Chavda said that late Thursday evening, Ashwar’s body was handed over to her family after the formalities of the post-mortem while the process of producing Jadeja in court will be undertaken on Friday. “We arrested Jadeja on Thursday and the probe is underway to understand the motive and the trigger for the crime. The accused is married and has a family of his own,” Chavda said.

In the FIR lodged at Sikka police station by Vyas, Jadeja has been booked for murder under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
