Days after nine persons were killed when a speeding Jaguar crashed into a crowd at an accident site on a flyover, an FIR in another case suspected to be linked to the accused has been registered, police said Sunday.
A rashly driven Mahindra Thar allegedly rammed the compound wall of a restaurant on the Sindhu Bhavan Road on July 3, police said. After registering the FIR in the case, police said an investigation has started to establish if the car was driven by Tathya Patel, the 19-year-old youth who allegedly ran a speeding Jaguar car over a crowd at an accident site on Iskcon flyover on Wednesday night.
“After the recent accident, (it was found) the Jaguar had the same registration number as the Thar. So an FIR was filed and investigation has started,” said police inspector K P Sagathiya who is investigating the case. “The investigation of the case is currently underway. We’re looking at evidence and trying to determine if he (Tathya) or somebody else was behind the wheel, ” the police inspector added. The owner of the car isn’t the same as the speeding Jaguar behind the killings on the busy SG (Sarkhej-Gandhinagar) Highway, said Sagathiya.
The FIR has been registered with N Division Police Station of Ahmedabad Traffic Police on the basis of a complaint by restaurant owner Mihir Shah.
According to Shah’s complaint, on July 3 at around 3:45 am, he got a call from a security guard at the Mauve Restaurant — that he owns — informing him that a Thar driver had caused damage by breaking a part of the compound wall of the restaurant.
Shah said that he had chosen not to lodge a complaint in the case then since it caused ‘negligible’ damage worth around Rs 20,000. He had checked the incident caught on the CCTV cameras of his restaurant. However, Shah added he decided to lodge the complaint after the Iskcon flyover accident as he realised that the registration number of the Jaguar car and the Thar car was the same.
