The Southwest monsoon had withdrawn completely from Gujarat on October 10.Even after a fortnight after the withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon, Gujarat will continue to receive rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued an orange alert for Amreli and Gir Somnath districts.
The post monsoon activity – due to a depression and a trough over the Arabian Sea – is expected to bring more rainfall till October 30.
The Southwest monsoon had withdrawn completely from Gujarat on October 10. But the development of the cyclonic system in the Arabian Sea prior to Shakti delayed its exit.
The normal onset of withdrawal of Southwest monsoon from Gujarat was around September 15, and the complete withdrawal date was October 5, according to IMD.
From 6 am to 6 pm on Sunday, districts of Navsari, Gir Somnath, Chhota Udepur, Panchmahal and Tapi recorded rainfall of over an inch with Jalalpore in Navsari recording the highest of 54 mm (2.13 inch).
Other talukas that received heavy rainfall are Sutrapada (43 mm), Kodinar (39 mm) and Una (33 mm) in Gir Somnath districts. Khergam, Gandevi and Chikhli in Navsari received 38 mm and 28 mm rainfall, respectively, while Kavant and Sankheda in Chhota Udepur received 36 mm and 33 mm, respectively.
“Heavy rainfall alert has been issued for Gujarat till October 30 owing to the depression and a trough over the Arabian Sea,” IMD regional director AK Das told The Indian Express.
Depression over eastcentral Arabian Sea moved nearly southwestwards and lay centered about 760 km west-southwest of Mumbai (Maharashtra), about 790 km west of Panjim (Goa), 870 km northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep) and about 970 km west-northwest of Mangalore (Karnataka). It is likely to move nearly southwestwards initially and then south-southwestwards across the eastcentral Arabian Sea in the next 24 hours, the IMD said in its forecast on Sunday.
The post monsoon rainfall has resulted in a drop in maximum temperatures that are expected to further fall by 2-3 degrees on Monday, while the minimum temperature is likely to fall by 2-3 degrees Tuesday onwards.
Along with the orange alert for Amreli and Gir Somnath heavy rainfall, a yellow alert has also been issued for Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Gandhinagar, Aravalli, Kheda, Ahmedabad, Anand, Mahisagar, Bharuch, Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Surendranagar, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Junagadh, Bhavnagar, Morbi, Dwarka, Botad and Kutch till October 30.
For October 28 and 29, the weather department said heavy rainfall is expected in the districts of Bharuch, Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Porbandar, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Dwarka and Gir Somnath. For October 30, heavy rainfall is expected in the districts of Porbandar, Junagadh, Amreli, Dwarka and Gir Somnath.
Light thunderstorms with lightning and surface winds (30-40 kmph) accompanied with light-to-moderate rain are expected across districts till October 30.
According to data maintained by the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) Gandhinagar, Gujarat as on Sunday received 119 per cent of the season’s rainfall.
