Ahmedabad witnessed heavy showers accompanied by hail, thunder, lightning and strong winds that began around 6 pm on Sunday. The Indian Premier League final match between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans, that was scheduled to start at 7.30 pm, was hence delayed.
The city recorded an average of 41.10 mm rainfall, with Chandkheda area recording 76 mm and South west zone 70 mm barely after barely two hours of rain. Roads were flooded and many were blocked owing to fallen trees, leading to traffic jams. A total of 15 complaints of uprooting of trees were reported by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) control room — 9 in the west zone and 5 in the north west zone.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast of rains for May 29 and 30.
“Light thunderstorm with lightning and surface wind 30- 40 kmph (in gust) accompanied with light to moderate rain very likely in the districts of North Gujarat region namely Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Panchmahal and Dahod; in the districts of Saurashtra namely Rajkot, Amreli, and Bhavnagar,” the IMD forecast stated.
On May 30, light thunderstorm with lightning and surface wind 30- 40 kmph (in gust) accompanied with light to moderate rain very likely at isolated places in the districts of North Gujarat region namely Banaskantha and Sabarkantha, IMD forecast added.
