H1N1 report: family alleges wrong treatment; panel says miscommunication led to confusion

Dinesh Agera (40),who died at the V S Hospital on Tuesday,was first declared positive for swine flu and then negative. Enraged by the “delay and wrong treatment”,the family members have written a complaint to Ahmedabad municipal commissioner I P Gautam.

While the inquiry committee report submitted on Wednesday maintained that the patient was tested negative for the deadly virus and that proper treatment was administered to him,his family alleged that after being tested positive,he was not shifted from Medilink private hospital for three hours.

On reaching the V S Hospital,a family member was asked to administer an injection to the patient while the doctors who instructed him stood at the door of the special OPD. The family members further alleged that they were not allowed to perform the last rites as the patient was till that time considered ‘H1N1 positive’.

Hansmukh Vaniya,brother-in-law of the deceased,said: “We had to carry the swab sample to the BJ Medical College and back. Before shifting to the V S Hospital,we were made to pay a bill of Rs 50,000. We arranged the ambulance ourselves and then we were told to give an injection to him. The doctors refused to come inside the special OPD. The five-hour delay in treatment due to this

‘miscommunication’ has cost a life.”

Meanwhile,AMC medical officer Suhas Kulkarni said,“We are still administering Tamiflu tablets to the victim’s family members and relatives.”
