VNSGU receives 2,000 applications against 75 vacancies as it begins process to hire teachers – for first time since 2017

In less than a month, Surat’s Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) has received applications from over 2,000 candidates for 75 vacant posts of professors, assistant professors, and associate professors.

VNSGU had issued an employment notice on August 4 in Surat and South Gujarat, aimed at filling vacancies for teaching postgraduate courses in various departments of the university – for the first time since 2017. The deadline for submission of applications was September 2.

The vacancies included 19 Professor positions, 30 Associate Professor positions, and 26 Assistant Professor positions.

On Wednesday, as varsity authorities began compiling the applications, they found that over 2,000 candidates have expressed interest in the vacancies.

Vice Chancellor of VNSGU, Dr K N Chawda, told The Indian Express, “These posts had been lying vacant for a long time. The last recruitment of Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors was done in 2017 wherein 17 vacant posts were filled. Presently, we have received 2,000 applications, which is a record in the history of VNSGU.”

Dr Chawda said the scrutiny committee that has been set up for the purpose will examine and verify the documents submitted by the candidates. “Later, as per the post, the names of candidates will be shortlisted. After that, we will issue a provisional list of the selected candidates. The purpose of issuing the provisional list is that, during this time, if any candidate has made a mistake or any issues arise, they can be sorted out. The candidates selected will be called for an interview, and then we will prepare a final list of the selected candidates, which will be sent to the State Education Department for clearance.”

The 18 different departments in which posts are to be filled are Aquatic Biology, Bio-Sciences, Chemistry, Comparative Literature, Economics, English, Gujarati, Human Resource Development, Journalism & Mass Communication, Mathematics, Physics, Public Administration, Rural Studies, Sociology, Statistics, Computer Science, Business & Industrial Management, and Education.

The basic eligibility criteria for applicants is a postgraduate degree with a minimum of 55 per cent marks, a PhD, or having cleared the NET (National Eligibility Test) and SLET (State Level Eligibility Test) exams, besides experience in teaching.

For an Associate Professor, in addition to the above eligibility, the candidate is expected to have eight years of experience in teaching or research activities in academia, and seven to eight research papers published in national and international journals, as well as other criteria.

For a Professor position, the candidate should have 10 years of teaching experience in a college or university as an Assistant or Associate Professor, or research activity at a national-level institution, and 10 research papers published in national and international journals, along with other eligibility requirements.
