A 24-year-old Indian student from Gujarat was attacked by a group of men here. This is the latest in a spate of racial assaults against Indian students in Australia.

Hardik Bipinbhai Patel from Surat was attacked by three people while he was about to enter his car on Friday night.

Patel,who is pursuing a course in commercial cookery at Melbourne University,said two people confronted him while he was about to enter his car and punched him right on the face.

“Then someone hit me on the head from behind and I fell down unconscious. When I woke up I was far away from the area,and an elderly man helped me to reach the hospital,” said Patel,who suffered facial injuries in the assault.

He said the attackers also robbed him of his cellphone,wallet and car keys,adding that they looked like drug addicts.

Patel was discharged from the hospital on Saturday and is reportedly doing well.

The attack comes after Indian students in Melbourne and Sydney held a series of rallies and made repeated calls for inquiry into the attacks.
