Ahmedabad: A man makes his way on a bicyle amid rainfall, in Ahmedabad on Thursday. As Gujarat continued to receive post-monsoon rainfall for the fifth consecutive day due to a depression over the Arabian Sea, the state witnessed a rare shift in temperature patterns. While maximum temperatures dropped to nearly 10 degrees below normal, the minimum temperatures rose to about 5 degrees above normal on Friday.
Except Naliya in Bhuj, all weather stations across Gujarat recorded daytime highs below 30 degrees Celsius. Maximum temperatures ranged between 25.5 degrees Celsius and 29.5 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures were between 20.5 degrees Celsius and 24.5 degrees Celsius.
“The temperatures are low, no doubt, for the month of October in the state. This is not such a common phenomenon,” said A K Das, Regional Director, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ahmedabad.
Rainfall continued across Gujarat on Friday, with 54 talukas reporting rain between 6 am and 12 noon. Gandevi in Navsari recorded the highest at 22 mm, followed by Vapi in Valsad at 21 mm. Several talukas in Bhavnagar, Surat, Amreli, Sabarkantha, Junagadh and Gir Somnath also received rainfall.
The small gap of just 4-5 degrees Celsius between maximum and minimum temperatures across the state is another unusual feature, IMD officials said. “The night-time temperatures have not declined like the daytime temperatures due to clouding, which prevents radiation from passing through. Due to clouds even in the daytime, night-time temperatures remain high,” Das explained.
The lowest minimum temperature on Friday was recorded at Gandhinagar (20.5degrees Celsius), followed by Amreli and Rajkot (21.6 degrees Celsius). In Ahmedabad, the night-time temperature was 22 degrees Celsius.
Daytime temperatures were significantly below normal — Rajkot (25.9 degrees Celsius) was 9.8 degrees Celsius below normal, and Ahmedabad (25.5 degrees Celsius) was 9.4 degrees Celsius below. Amreli (26.3 degrees Celsius) and Vadodara (26.6 degrees Celsius) saw drops of 8.9 degrees Celsius, while Bhavnagar (25.8 degrees Celsius), Deesa (27.3 degrees Celsius) and Surat (27.2 degrees Celsius) were between 8 degrees Celsius and 8.7 degrees Celsius below normal.
In contrast, minimum temperatures were higher than normal by up to 4.6 degrees Celsius. Deesa (23 degrees Celsius) was 4.6 degrees Celsius above normal, and Vadodara (24 degrees Celsius) was 4.3 degrees Celsius higher than average.
Maximum temperatures in Gujarat, in degrees Celsius, were 25.5 in Ahmedabad and Surendranagar, 25.8 in Bhavnagar, 25.9 in Rajkot 25.9, 26.3 in Amreli, 26.6 in Vadodara, 27.2 in Surat, 27.4 in Kandla Port, 27.3 in Deesa, 27.6 in Keshod, 28.1 in Veraval, 28.4 in Porbandar, and 29.5 in Gandhinagar.
