The number of houses built in Gujarat under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) during the financial year 2022-23 dipped by 17.5 per cent, data from the Union Ministry of Rural Development show.
As against 77,263 houses built under the central scheme during 2021-22, the number dipped to 63,765 in 2022-23. However, of the total 5.85 lakh houses sanctioned since the beginning of the scheme in 2016-17, Gujarat has completed 70 per cent of the houses, i.e., about 4.06 lakh units.
Meanwhile, a statement from the state government Saturday stated that Rs 4,877 crore has been spent on PMAY (Gramin) till date. Under PMAY (Urban) scheme, Gujarat has constructed an additional 8.74 lakh of the 10.57 lakh sanctioned houses since the scheme began in 2015.
The central government restructured Indira Awas Yojana as PMAY (Gramin) in 2016.
The scheme was said to be part of the central government’s commitment to provide ‘Housing For All’ by 2022.
Under this scheme, the government aims to provide “pucca” houses measuring 25 square metres to those living in “kutcha” and dilapidated houses.
The cost of the housing unit is shared between the central and state governments in a 60:40 ratio.
