Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has given the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) the nod to begin works worth Rs 1,003 crore as part of phase 2 of Kharikat Canal redevelopment. Under phase 2, work will be carried out in stretch 1 from Sardar Patel Ring Road to Naroda Crematorium; from Vinjol Vehla to Ghodasar (Avkar Hall) in stretch 2; from Ghodasar to Vatva village in stretch 3; and from Vatva village to SP Ring Road in stretch 4 and 5. An RCC stormwater box structure, road, footpath, retaining wall, water supply pipeline, irrigation structure, storm water extension and sewer system have been included in the works. “With the expansion of Ahmedabad city over time due to development on both sides of the canal, the canal water is polluted due to the mixing of solid waste in the canal bed, which also poses a problem of harm to public health. In addition, the Town Planning (TP) connectivity issues also arise in the areas,” the state government said in an official release. AMC has completed 80 per cent of the canal development work in the first phase of the total length of Kharikat Canal, from Naroda Crematorium to Vinjol Vehla, covering a length of 12.75 kilometres. Out of the Rs 1,338 crore allocated for phase 1, more than Rs 700 crore have been spent so far. The recent approval from the CM is expected to take care of the remaining length of the Kharikat Canal.
