Gujarat: Irrigation dept officer held for ‘accepting bribe’

The complainant told the ACB that he was turned away when he went to enquire about the payment but later, the accused told him that he would have to pay Rs 1 lakh as bribe.

The Chhota Udepur Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday arrested a Class-2 officer of the District Panchayat irrigation department for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a contractor in lieu of clearing an outstanding bill of the same amount for a lake project.

The ACB said that the accused, Amit Mishra, in-charge executive engineer and deputy executive engineer of Naswadi taluka in Chhota Udepur district, had sought the bribe from the complainant in order to “clear” the bill payment of Rs 1 lakh that had been pending since 2022-23, when the work was completed.

According to the ACB, Mishra was caught red-handed on Tuesday while accepting the bribe amount from the complainant who had worked on the government lake rejuvenation project in Linda Tekra village and was due to be paid Rs 2.52 lakh. Of this total amount, Rs 1.5 lakh had been paid while the balance amount of Rs 1 lakh was pending.

The complainant told the ACB that he was turned away when he went to enquire about the payment but later, the accused told him that he would have to pay Rs 1 lakh as bribe in order to have his bill of the same amount cleared for payment. Police inspector KN Rathwa of ACB Chhota Udepur, which is under the purview Vadodara range ACB, laid the trap for Mishra on Tuesday and arrested him red-handed, a release from the ACB said.
