The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Tuesday arrested two drug smugglers in separate cases at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and seized Rs15 crore worth hydroponic cannabis, according to an official statement.

In the first case, the DRI said that based on a tip-off, the officers intercepted an Indian national coming from Bangkok at the international airport in Ahmedabad. Upon search of the passenger’s check-in luggage, four cloth bags containing 10 packets of breakfast cereal were found.

According to the DRI statement: “Inside these packets, a greenish, lumpy substance (wrapped in airtight polythene packets) was discovered”. The officials later tested the material after which it was confirmed that the substance was cannabis, commonly known as marijuana, said the statement.

The drugs weighed 9.2 kg and are valued at over Rs 9 crore in the international market, said the officials. In another case, the DRI, in a joint operation with Customs Department at Ahmedabad International Airport, intercepted a Thailand national and seized 6 kg drugs worth Rs 6 crore from his luggage. The person was also subsequently arrested. The two accused have been arrested under the provisions of NDPS Act.
