‘Anti-Dalit remarks’: Gujarat Congress’s Mevani seeks termination of Mahisagar Collector
Mevani, who has been demanding an FIR under the Atrocities Act against the Mahisagar Collector, on Saturday wrote to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

Gujarat Congress working president and Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani on Saturday sought “termination from appointment under IAS” of Mahisagar’s District Collector Neha Kumari “with immediate effect” for allegedly making anti-Dalit and anti-Adivasi remarks during a Taluka Swagat programme in October.
Stressing that the state government must “initiate disciplinary proceedings” against Neha Kumari, Mevani has said that “her continuation in office” as a bureaucrat in a senior position is “not only a violation of the ethical and legal provisions of the Service Manual of India but also a deterrent for marginal sections to approach the bureaucracy in need”.
Mevani, who has been demanding an FIR under the Atrocities Act against the Mahisagar Collector, on Saturday wrote to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Chief Secretary seeking immediate termination of Kumari from the IAS cadre.
In the letter, Mevani said, “I request you to initiate proceedings for termination of Ms Neha Kumari from her services under the IAS as well as recommend the filing of necessary charges against her under the Atrocities Act and ensure her immediate arrest, in order to ensure that members of the Dalit and Tribal communities do not continue to be insulted and humiliated by such irresponsible and callous bureaucrats in India.”
Stating that Kumari could not “fulfill” her responsibilities towards the people with “such attitude”, Mevani said, “It is noteworthy that the District Collector is also the Chairperson of the District Vigilance Committee, responsible for monitoring the implementation of and redressals under the Atrocities Act… In addition, the District Collector heads the court of the District Collectorate and revenue matters as well as is responsible for effective implementation of schemes for Dalits and Tribals… One can imagine the ineffective and biased manner in which she would be holding her office and fulfilling responsibilities…”
Mevani also said that Kumari’s continuation in office “diminish the guiding principles and guarantees of our Constitution” and mentioned that a press conference addressed by Kumari on October 29, had “levelled casteist and political intentions on the MLA (Mevani), an elected representative, who has raissed objections on her unparliamentary behaviour.”
“This is a violation of relevant sections of All India Service (Conduct) Rules, which makes her liable to disciplinary action and termination,” he said.
