Gujarat Confidential: Waiting for Signal

Speaking at the inaugural session, Desai said that Science especially explores the eerie silence of the Universe.

At the Hindu Dharma Acharya Sabha on ‘Spirituality and Science’ held in Ahmedabad Saturday, Nilesh Desai, Director, Space Applications Centre (SAC), ISRO, said that he believed there was no life anywhere except on earth, adding it was his “personal view”.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Desai said that Science especially explores the eerie silence of the Universe. “Are we alone? Scientists are searching if there are earth-like planets in the universe, which is so big. Chandrayaan 3 had generated a lot of excitement…We are trying to search for signals in space and co-relate… I personally feel that there is no life anywhere…”

He further said, “There is a total lack of evidence of life other than on earth even if our reasoning says there has to be life somewhere else in the universe. If there is life somewhere else, why are we not getting evidence…? Is it because of the rarity of intelligence that some other species have not developed technologies to communicate to us so we are not able to locate them… maybe they have isolated themselves… or there is lack of economic resources to spread their signals to convey to others that they are existing… or may be humans are not capable enough and have not listened enough to receive their signals or they may be too far away…”

Desai said, “Maybe everyone is trying to listen to a signal from anywhere or may be they think that communication is dangerous so they are not communicating.”
