Over 10 lakh ha of farmland in Gujarat impacted by unseasonal rains: Minister Jitu Vaghani

Gujarat government may consider giving additional financial assistance to affected farmers over and above the norms under the State Disaster Response Fund.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has ordered a survey to assess the loss incurred by the farmers due to the recent spell of unseasonal rains. As per the primary estimate, more than 10 lakh hectares of land in the state has been affected by the unseasonal rain last week, Agriculture minister and spokesperson of Gujarat government Jitu Vaghani said on Wednesday.

Addressing the media after the Cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, Vaghani said, “As per a report received from State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), 239 talukas of 33 districts in the state have received rainfall between October 23 and 28…The CM has given orders to immediately carry out survey (of the losses) and complete it in seven days.”

Technological survey will be carried out to complete it expeditiously, Vaghani said, adding that physical survey will also be conducted to ensure that no farmer who sustained loss is left out.

The agriculture minister also said that the state government will proceed further after the survey. He indicated that the government may consider giving additional financial assistance to affected farmers over and above the norms under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).

Quoting Vaghani, an official release stated that the state government has issued district-wise agro advisory to farmers on how to maintain standing crops.

Vaghani also said that while various ministers were sent to different parts of the state to assess the flood situation, the CM is also doing real time monitoring of the situation. He said that the amount of loss sustained by farmers could be ascertained only after the survey. He added that all the districts of the state have been affected by the unseasonal rain, the districts severely affected by it are Amreli, Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath, Navsari, Surat, Tapi and Valsad.
