Gujarat: Bhavnagar man arrested in counterfeit notes racket dies in hospital

A farmer who had been arrested last month by Special Operation Group (SOG) of Bhavagar after alleged counterfeit notes worth Rs 30,500 were recovered from him, died in a government hospital in Bhavnagar city following a paralysis attack.

Bhagwan Chauhan (41), a resident of Tadhavad village in Talaja taluka of Bhavnagar was arrested by SOG on March 30 after 61 counterfeit notes of Rs 500 denomination were allegedly recovered from him. Based on the information provided by Bhagwan, police also raided residence of one Kalu Mori in Bhakhalka village also in Talaja and allegedly recovered 27 fake notes of Rs500 denomination each from his also.

SOG said that Mori was manager of Shetrunji Dam branch Bhavnagar District Cooperative (BDC) Bank Limited. Police had subsequently arrested three other men also in this connection, including Bhagwan’s younger brother Dilip and the mastermind of the alleged racket, Sunil Dungraliya.

After his police remanded ended on April 2, Bhagwan was sent to judicial custody and was lodged in Bhavnagar district jail since. However, he suffered an attack of paralysis on April 5 and was admitted to Sir Takhtasinji General Hospital in Bhavnagar city.

“After the paralysis attack, he had lost control over his left limbs and had remained in intensive care unit for three days. His condition worsened in the wee hours of Friday as he started vomiting at 12:30 AM. Despite all efforts by doctors, he succumbed to the attack at 4 AM,” Nilambaug police sub-inspector Meghabhai Renuka said.

Police said that Bhagwan’s younger brother and three others are also lodged in Bhavnagar district jail. Nilambaug police have registered a case of accidental death and started further investigation.
