Congress MLAs created an uproar on the issue of flood in Banaskantha along with northern districts of Patan and Kutch in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly on the third and concluding day of the Monsoon Session on Wednesday.

Soon after the Question Hour, Congress MLA Amrutji Thakor, who represents Banaskantha’s Kankrej Assembly constituency, stood up and sought permission from the Speaker for a point of order and expressed concerns over flood situation in Suigam taluka where several villages are still marooned and cut off. He demanded immediate relief measures including financial help and household assistance to people affected by heavy rains.

However, when Speaker Shankar Chaudhary sought clarification on his point of order, Thakor, accompanied by Congress MLA from Danta in Banaskantha district, Kantibhai Kharadi, continued to demand immediate relief work and financial support to the flood-affected families.

On the direction of the Speaker, sergeants intervened to control the situation.

Speaker Chaudhary, who also represents Banaskantha’s Tharad Assembly constituency, reprimanded the protesting MLAs, pointing out that the fact that they came ready with banners shows that they are not interested in the benefit of the people and were focussed only on grabbing attention.

Later, while addressing the media, the Congress legislators demanded an immediate survey of the damage to crops and sought cash doles for families in the rain-affected districts of Kutch, Banaskantha and Patan.
