Gujarat: 5 killed as truck ploughs into bus in bid to overtake another vehicle

The injured include two children — a 10-year-old boy and a one-year-old girl

Five people were killed and 26 others sustained injuries after a truck driver, while attempting to overtake another truck on a rural road between Mundra and Bhuj, plough into a bus in the opposite lane.

The incident happened around 1.30 pm on Friday, said Kutch (West) SP Vikas Sunda. “While the bus was travelling from Mundra to Bhuj, the two trucks were travelling in the opposite direction. The driver of one trucks attempted to overtake the other and crashed headlong into the bus. While four passengers died on the spot, one died in the hospital,” said SP Sunda.

An FIR was filed against the truck driver, identified as Saddam Hussain Abdul Samad (39), a resident of Bihar. He was booked under Sections 105(2) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 125(A)(B) (rash or negligent act that endangers life or safety of others), and 281 (rash driving) of the BNS and placed under arrest on Friday evening.

The deceased have been identified as Ashif Fakirmohammad Manjothi (22), Kulsum Mohammadhussain Sana (50), Saale Sachu Rayasi (24), Shah Alam Gulam Mohammad (36) and Tobarandas Bansidhar Johan (37).

The injured include two children — a 10-year-old boy and a one-year-old girl.

Officials from Kera police station, who were near the spot, rushed and helped ferry the injured people to GK General Hospital in Bhuj.

Speaking to mediapersons on Friday evening, Kutch District Collector Amit Arora said that among the survivors, two were in critical condition. The condition of others appeared to be stable.
