Travelling in buses run by Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) has become costlier from Sunday. The state government has approved the Corporations long pending proposal to levy toll tax on passengers. The go-ahead on Saturday night, will save GSRTC from a loss of Rs 22 crore every year.
R B Shah, chief traffic and commercial manager,of GSRTC,said the governments decision was conveyed on Saturday afternoon and the levy was to be implemented from Sunday morning.
He said the proposal will lead to a 25 per cent saving for the government on GSRTC . There are 18 toll plazas of the Centre and four of the state government in Gujarat, where passengers will be charged Re 1 per toll point during their journey in the state. Shah said,so far,GSRTC had been paying toll tax to the state government, but was not being allowed to recover it from the passengers. There was no other way to cut the loss without effecting a hike,he said.
It was only three weeks ago that the Corporation had jacked up bus fares by 5.32 per cent in different categories across various distances. The reason cited then was the annual financial burden of Rs 51.47 crore caused by rise in fuel prices.
It was also said that the move was aimed at maintaining the level of services like luxury buses,Gurjarnagri,CNG buses and sleeper and air-conditioned luxury coaches.
