Girl ‘raped and murdered’ in Amreli,police pick up two

A day after the alleged rape and murder of a 21-year-old girl in her home in Nani Dhari village of Khambha taluka in Amreli district,the police picked up two persons even as the taluka observed a complete bandh on Sunday.

Sanjay Vala,who has been named in the complaint as suspect in the case,and his alleged accomplice Bhabhlu Vala were being questioned by police. However,nobody was arrested till late in the evening. The complaint was filed by younger brother of the victim.

“We are questioning them to verify if they were the real culprits,” Amreli District Superintendent of Police (DSP) Shobha Bhutda told The Indian Express on Sunday. Police said both the accused were residents of Nani Dhari village.

Meanwhile,Khambha observed a bandh in protest of the crime. Shops and markets in the Khambha and Nani Dhari village remained shut for the day. According to the complaint,the crime was allegedly committed on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday when the victim and her teenage brother were alone at home. Vala called out for the name of the girl’s father saying he need a saw at around 11:30 pm. However,the boy said his father was away to Rajkot to meet his elder brother. Upon this,Vala asked the boy to open the doors and offer him a glass of water.

However,as the boy opened the doors,two men wearing masks,barged into the house. While one of them put a knife on the neck of the boy,Vala allegedly entered the room where the victim was sleeping,the complaint states. He tied her to the coat,raped her and later tried to force pesticide down her throat.

The assailants tried to escape with Rs 50,000 cash from the house. But,the boy chanced upon a knife and managed to salvage Rs 25,000 and started running for his life. Police said the culprits tried to kick-start a motorcycle to chase the boy but failed to start the vehicle. The boy took a bicycle of someone and peddled his way to nearby Ingorala village and informed a relative.

The boy and the relative returned Nani Dhari at aroud 5:30 am but by that time the girl had died. The body was sent to Bhavnagar Medical College for post mortem.
