Come 2010 and Indias celebrity gay prince Manvendra Singh Gohil of Rajpipla will debut in a Hollywood film as an actor.
This July,Hollywood heavyweight Anthony Meindl had visited Rajpipla to discuss the plans with Gohil. A formal proposal has already reached Gohil who says he is excited as he has done only documentary films prior to this.
Tony (Anthony) is a well-known writer, producer, director and actor who has worked with the likes of Jeremy Irons. He came to Rajwant Palace with the proposal. I found the storyline interesting and agreed to do it. But I am quite nervous as there is a difference between a documentary and a feature film, Gohil told Newsline.
Meindl, according to Gohil, has his own non-profit theatre company,The Meta Theatre Company, where he has worked with the likes of Olympia Dukakis,Joel Schumacher,David Schwimmer,Paris Barclay,Guy Ferland, producers Bryan Burke and Josh Berman, writers Stephen Tolkin and James Duff, and several others from Hollywood. As an actor,Meindls work includes Camelot at the Hollywood Bowl, starring Jeremy Irons.
Gohil says Meindl will be visiting Rajpipla again early next year with the final script.
The story is about a girl who watched the Gay Prince on the Oprah Winfrey Show and decided to explore more about gay issues. She arrives in India and meets the prince; gets to know more about him and his activities; ends up settling down in India, and starts working for the gay cause. This is the rough storyline, says Gohil.
He adds: I had raised my apprehensions about my acting skills during my detailed discussions with Tony. I have been facing cameras ever since I made it public that I am gay,but acting is something else. It will be delivering dialogues on the sets,in front of cameras, and there will be the entire crew. I am quite scared of all these. But Tony has assured me that he will teach me acting skills before the project kicks off.
Meindls The Wonder Girls had won an award at the Slamdance Film Festival Screenplay Competition in 2007. The film is slated for production in Berlin.
He has also produced, wrote, and directed a 35-mm short film,READY? OK! which was a Top-20 finalist in the Planet Out Short Film Awards in conjunction with the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, and the Sundance Film Festival.
The film was also a finalist for the Best of the Fest for the Indianapolis Gay & Lesbian Film Festival.
