A major fire broke out around ONGC well number 18 near Ramol on the southern outskirts of the city on Thursday afternoon. No loss of life or property was reported.
Anil Johri,executive director of ONGCs Ahmedabad Asset,said the incident occurred around 2 pm when dry farm waste caught fire near the well in the fields. Our fire brigade team arrived from Navagam within 20 minutes and took control of the situation in half an hour.
According to Johri,Ahmedabad is the only city in the country having an oil well within its limits.
AMC Chief Fire Officer M F Dastoor said the fire broke out after wild vegetation in the area caught a spark probably from some camp fire in the fields in the early hours of the day. He said the fire brigade had sent 11 water tankers and one fire fighter to the spot.
