A Head Constable saved the life of a suicidal man by tackling him out of the way of a goods train on Friday.
Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Jat said that Head Constable Lalji Bharwad, posted at Viramgam Town police station in Rural Ahmedabad, “displayed extraordinary bravery and presence of mind, setting a shining example for the entire force.”
At around 4 pm on Friday, while on routine patrolling duty, HC Lalji Bharwad noticed a middle-aged man suddenly running toward a railway track near a crossing. At the same moment, a fast-approaching goods train was arriving on the tracks.
Bharwad stopped his bike, sprinted toward the man, and in a split-second decision that possibly risked his own life, jumped forward, caught hold of the man in his arms, and forcefully pushed him backwards in the opposite direction. Both fell aside, just as the train passed.
“The daring rescue left both with minor injuries from the fall, but it saved a precious human life from certain death,” said SP Jat. Police later spoke to the man, who informed them that he had been facing family problems, due to which he had decided to take the step.
