Representative image.The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Vapi on Thursday arrested the proprietor of a company which allegedly made banned Mephedrone (MD) drug in the garb of manufacturing ballpens, officials said. A seizure of contraband worth Rs 25 crore was made on the premises of the factory, said officials.
Officials said factory owner Sanjeev alias Sanjay Patel (58), a resident of Pardi village in Valsad, is the proprietor of a company at Umbergaon GIDC. Sanjay was produced before Umbergaon court by DRI officials who received a two-day remand that will last until Saturday afternoon.
On October 8, DRI officials carried out raids at a factory in Umbergaon GIDC in Valsad district and claimed to have seized 17.33 kilograms of banned MD in liquid form. The officials arrested three persons – Vikrant Patel (Sanjeev’s cousin), employee Kalpesh Dodiya and labourer Ajay Mhato.
The trio was produced before court and sent to remand till October 11. While the three were in jail, officials searched the house of Vikrant and seized the formula of manufacturing MD.
Presently, all the three accused are in judicial custody at Navsari sub jail.
During the search on factory premises, officials found the rent agreement which stated that the factory had been let out to manufacture ballpens.
Sources in DRI said that on the basis of the confessional statements of three accused, the name of Sanjay cropped up during investigation.
