The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in a joint operation with Ahmedabad Customs Department seized 39.24 kg of hydroponic cannabis at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and arrested three people, according to a statement.
The contraband, with an estimated value of Rs 39 crore, was seized from three Indian nationals who had arrived from Bangkok, Thailand, said the statement issued on Friday. This latest bust follows the seizure of 37.2 kg hydroponic cannabis on April 29 and 17.5 kg on April 20, from Indian nationals arriving from Bangkok.
With this third operation, the total quantity of narcotics seized at Ahmedabad airport from April 20 is now around 95 kg. This seizure, the statement said, “came just four days after an earlier DRI operation on April 29 and is the third major arrest at the airport in the last two weeks”. Based on intelligence inputs, the officers kept a close watch on the suspects upon their arrival. “A search of their six trolley bags revealed 60 packets of a suspicious green, lumpy substance concealed in branded food products such as Kellogg’s cereals and other snacks. The items were hidden under clothes,” said the statement.
Subsequent chemical analysis confirmed that the substance was hydroponic marijuana, said sources. The drugs were seized under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. All three accused have been arrested and further investigation into the matter is underway.
Meanwhile, in another incident, police on Friday seized 10 kg of charas that had floated onto the coastline near Khuada village in Kutch. Kothara police station in-charge, police inspector BP Kharadi said that a police team was patrolling the coastline near Khuada village at 11 am when they found 10 packets of charas that had landed on the beach. A probe has been launched into the matter, said police.
