A doctor, who is also the owner of a hospital at Vyara in Tapi district, was booked on Friday after two former women employees of the hospital filed police complaints against him, accusing him of rape and sexual harassment.
This comes a day after the Tapi chief judicial magistrate ordered the police to register an offence against the doctor.
The women, both 28 years old, had on June 29 filed two applications at the Vyara police station against the doctor.
They again visited the police station separately on July 1 and 4 to answers questions of the officers but no FIR was lodged.
Following this, through advocate Nitin Pradhan, they moved separate pleas before the court on July 8. The same day, the doctor’s wife filed a complaint of cheating against the two women at Vyara police station, which lodged an FIR in the matter. The wife alleged that the two women, between 2019 and 2024, took cash worth Rs 3.23 crore from the hospital for personal use.
Following this, on July 11, Chief Judicial Magistrate G V Patel directed the Vyara police to register two separate offences against the doctor on the basis of two applications submitted by the women to the police station.
According to the FIR lodged on Friday, while one of the women worked at the reception counter of the hospital, the other worked for the hospital management.
The woman who worked for the management alleged that in January, the doctor had called her to a room in the hospital and raped her. He also allegedly threatened to sack her if she disclosed the incident to anybody. Since then, the woman was allegedly raped multiple times in the hospital.
The other complainant alleged that every now and then, the doctor used to touch her inappropriately and demand favours, which she denied. The doctor also allegedly sent her vulgar messages.
Following this, both the women quit their jobs in April. According to the complaints, the doctor continued to threaten them to keep quiet.
When contacted, advocate Nitin Pradhan said, “When both the women visited the police station on June 29, their statements were recorded on camera but no case was lodged. While on other hand, when the doctor’s wife filed a complaint against the women, they were booked the same day. We don’t understand why the police delayed lodging of FIR in our case.”
When asked about the delay in lodging the FIR, Vyara town police Inspector N S Chauhan said, “We had accepted the applications filed by both the women and were working on it. In the meantime, the doctor’s wife also filed a complaint against the two women and we registered a cheating case. We were also looking into the applications filed by the two women. But they moved court, which directed us to registered an offence, which we have done.”
“The medical examination of both women were completed on Saturday… The accused doctor, meanwhile, is absconding,” Chauhan added.
