They were detained on Tuesday and booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and other sections of the BNS, as well as The Explosives Act, 1884, and The Explosive Substances Act, 1908, at Deesa Rural police station.Banaskantha Police on Thursday received an eight-day remand of a father-son duo, the accused in the case of a blast at a firecracker warehouse in the district, which on Tuesday killed 21 people, including 7 children.
The accused Khubchand Renumal Mohanani and his son Deepak Khubchand Mohanani are the owners of Deepak Traders, which owns the warehouse. They were detained on Tuesday and booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and other sections of the BNS, as well as The Explosives Act, 1884, and The Explosive Substances Act, 1908, at Deesa Rural police station.
Banaskantha SP Akshayraj Makwana said that both the accused were formally placed under arrest late on Wednesday night, and subsequently produced in a local court on Thursday. The court granted the police the eight-day remand of the accused that will end on April 11.
According to Banaskantha Superintendent of Police (SP) Akshayraj Makwana, the four persons detained on Wednesday include a brother of Deepak; an accountant, another person dealing with GST billing of Deepak Traders, and a fourth person who, the police have alleged, was involved in attempting to hide or destroy the mobile phone devices of Khubchand and Deepak.
As on Thursay evening, the four persons remained under detention and were being questioned about their alleged role in the incident.
Meanwhile, SP Makwana said that both the Special Investigation Teams (SITs) — one comprising Banaskantha police officers and led by DySP C L Solanki, and another headed by IAS Bhavin Patel of the Revenue Department — formed after the incident, have begun their investigations.
The police also revealed that primary analysis of the FSL investigation at the site of the tragedy found traces of two chemicals — aluminium powder and Yellow Dextrin powder. Aluminium powder is highly flammable and is used to create the flash effect by firecrackers while Yellow Dextrin is used as a binding agent
SP Makwana earlier said, “This firm had purchased this aluminium powder from a Mumbai-based company and we are investigating why this substance was purchased.”
